March is Women's History Month. March 8 is International Women's Day. March is also March Madness, but I believe that the use of the word "madness" in a month dedicated to women is unintentional. Right?

This week in BlogHer's Wall of Shame (and Fame): Party on, Canadian hockey jocks, putting the "Madam" in "Madam Governor," and what the hell is a mancake?

Although the news is frequently disturbing, I still read the newspaper while I eat breakfast. On Friday morning, a news item caught my eye: an art gallery in New York's West Village is displaying a live naked woman. The title told me everything that I needed to know: Hey, Look! She's Naked! But It's Art, So It's All Right.

Every once in a while, something causes me to take a deep breath and turn down the heat on my boiling cauldron of seething cynicism. The latest campaign by The White House Project, who work to advance women in leadership with the project mission "add women, change everything," is causing me to step back and think. The organization is teaming up with Barbie to inspire girls to aim high - as high as the Oval Office if that interests them.

Arguably the hottest viral video these days is the "Manmercial" The Man Your Man Could Smell Like. In just a couple of weeks it has garnered over 2 million views -- far surpassing any of the other spots on the Old Spice YouTube channel.

Here's an idea that is, I think, long overdue: doulas for women who are having abortions.

Amongst the ladies of BlogHer, a bout of semi-secret self-flagellation seems to have broken out in regards to enjoying various commercials that ran during the Super Bowl. Sure, the comments are full of self-confident women standing up for their opinions, explaining why they liked an ad or found it offensive. Behind the scenes, though, e-mails have been flying. For example, Mir at Would Coulda Shoulda gave me permission to share her thoughts:

Have you seen stories such as April Ryan's petty questions suggesting White House Social Secretary Desiree Roger seeks to upstage Michelle Obama? How about the persistent gossip rag rumors that the First Lady and Oprah are feuding? Do you remember the campaign commentary that blamed women's distrust of women for why Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin couldn't win?

This week in BlogHer's Wall of Shame (and Fame): Blogging well is the best revenge (on John Mayer); Barbie's Dream Cube, and nothing says "Winter Olympics" like blackface ...

I read BlogHer Contributing Editor Suzanne Reisman's post on religion and violence towards women as I was trying to figure out what to write this post about. It made me sad. Then, as I put away my lunch dishes, my eye fell to my five-year-old's ice-cream-cone art project. Next to her list of vocabulary words. And it occurred to me that I had the ability to influence her understanding of words, of expectations for herself as a woman. Do you agree? Let's take a poll.

Last year I went to Africa for vacation, in the Zulu region of South Africa. When I returned I didn't really have much to say. I feared any word...
